According to Leslie Field, author of The Queen's Jewels, the necklace was made from pearls reportedly given to Queen Elizabeth by Japan in the 1970s.
Now, almost 40 years later, the necklace was spotted on Catherine at Prince Philip's funeral last year.
Princess of Wales is a courtesy title used since the 14th century on the English and later British throne.
