The Way of Water' reportedly underperformed at the box office on its opening weekend, putting Disney's $2 billion wager under stress
"Avatar 2" isn't performing up to expectations at the box office during its first weekend.
From a forecast of over $150 million to between $130 million and $150 million, Disney reduced it.
However, word-of-mouth and favorable reviews may help the movie become a longer-term hit.
It appears that the highly anticipated Avatar: The Way of Water is performing below expectations at the box office so far.
The production of the movie reportedly cost $350 million.
According to Variety, director James Cameron has declined to publicly state a figure but reportedly said it would need to earn more than $2 billion to break even.
In fact, the first "Avatar" was a relative flop on its opening weekend in 2009 as it only brought in $73 million (not accounting for inflation), according ...
...to a report from Business Insider at the time. However, the film went on to become the highest-grossing film of all time with a $29 billion take.
A request for comment from Insider was not immediately answered by Disney.
